In its latest report, the National Audit Office of Finland (NAOF) has compiled the impacts of its work on sustainable development. Audit and oversight work promotes the efficiency, accountability and transparency of public institutions, in particular.
The NAOF’s activities promote several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN’s 2030 Agenda. The key goals we have identified are SDG 8, which focuses on work and economic growth; SDG 16, which concerns good governance and efficient institutions; and SDG 17, which emphasises international cooperation.
By auditing the management of central government finances, overseeing political funding and maintaining the Finnish Transparency Register, the NAOF supports transparency and accountability in the central government. The NAOF’s audits cover the entire central government. The report outlines which SDGs are promoted by the findings of different audits.
The NAOF operates effectively when performing its core tasks with high quality and monitoring the achievement of its objectives. In recent years, we have developed up-to-date management reporting to support decision-making.
We also report on our own footprint, i.e. the ecological, social and economic impacts of our activities. Our energy consumption has decreased, and the increase in remote work and remote/hybrid meetings also in international communication has reduced travel. In addition, our employee satisfaction is at a high level.
“Sustainability and responsibility are at the heart of our work: by carrying out our core activities effectively, we ensure sustainable management of public finances and an effective and transparent central government. We keep in mind that we, too, are accountable for our own activities and know that we serve as an example for others,” says Sami Yläoutinen in the introduction to the report.
